About the night mode

We’re in the process of testing out different kinds of lighting for the night mode. The night mode was part of the $60k stretch goal that we have hit, thanks to YOU! And because of this, we’d love to make sure that we give you the best night light ever created.
So what exactly is a night mode, and what does it do?
Our body runs on something called a circadian rhythm, which is heavily dependant on light. It is because of this rhythm that we naturally sleep at night and wake during the day, and that prolonged exposure to blue light from our screens, computers or phones, will throw our rhythm off and make it difficult to sleep.
The Fog Box RGB leds will be set to red. Only the 4 1800K LEDs will be on. Red light has been proven to increase melatonin levels, which regulates our sleep and circadian rhythm. 1800K light is a type of white light that simulates candlelight. This brightness also aides in regulating the melatonin production in your body, as it prepares to go to sleep.
“These findings indicate that room light exerts a profound suppressive effect on melatonin levels and shortens the body's internal representation of night duration. Hence, chronically exposing oneself to electrical lighting in the late evening disrupts melatonin signaling and could therefore potentially impact sleep, thermoregulation, blood pressure, and glucose homeostasis.”

Hello everyone!!!
Your Backerkit surveys are out! These Backerkit surveys allow you to easily collect your shipping info and will allow our fulfillment service to seamlessly ship you exactly what you’ve ordered. By filling out the Backerkit surveys this week, it will allow our manufacturers and fulfillment partners to have all your complete order for production as soon as possible! This is extremely important because they will be taking about 45 days off during their “holiday season” from January through February for Chinese New Years.
In case you missed it, this Kickstarter update provided the information some of you have been asking regarding shipping costs and the automatic update you all will get from the stretch goal you helped us reach!

What are MICROGREENS?!
In the process of experimenting with dozens of plants that are optimal for the FogBox, we discovered delicious AND nutritious microgreens.
Microgreens are the fancy vegetables professional chefs use sparingly to decorate (or garnish) their dishes. They’re also sold at farmer’s markets and specialty health food markets for $5 PER OUNCE!
After growing and consuming POUNDS of microgreens ourselves, we’ve discovered the FogBox and its side kick “the desktop drawer” are AMAZING at growing these delicious veggies.
We’ve been growing some microgreens with our office FogBox and they’ve been growing like CRAZY.
Why you would love microgreens:
Ready to harvest in about 10-14 days. There’s also a higher variety of microgreens being offered now, including arugula, basil, kale, and cilantro!
Research has proven microgreens are up to 50x MORE nutritious than its counterpart adult plant.

They grow EXTREMELY well in the FogBox!
We’ve been putting fresh garnishes on our salads in the office every few days with the microgreens we’ve got growing in our FogBox. Check out some of the crazy growth in just 5 days:
This was after only about 5 days! We’ve also been using the complementary desk drawer to grow them. We placed a separate light fixture above the desk drawer and found out that it made a great compartment for growing microgreens! It’s as simple as placing the seeds on a cotton pad and adding water every day.

We were introduced to an incredible backer tool from our friends at EcoQube that will allow YOU to easily customize your FogBox, keep updated with FogBox progress, change to your shipping address and make future maintenance easier than ever. It’s a tool we’ve invested heavily into in order to create the best experience for you. There will be several survey questions in the beginning you will have the option to easily opt out of.

Why we created the FogBox
If you are familiar with the word fog box, then you should have a slight awareness of hydroponics – the latest trend on saving energy and space for irrigation, to effectively grow plants or crops indoors, hassle free.
NASA initially led the way in advanced hydroponics, mainly for the ambition of colonizing Planet Mars.
This then leads us to the present hype on Fogponics, which is the use of water and nutrients being provided to the plant in the form of vapor.
What are the benefits of Aeroponics over Hydroponics?
It saves you time and money
Fogponics cuts waste from nutrients and water by 50% - whilst providing a far cleaner and low-maintenance system.
Much more effective plant growth
Fogponics works ergonomically towards the plant too, as the suspended roots give much more flexibility for growth (as opposed to restrictive plant pots, which need replacing every time the roots outgrow it).
The fog prevents a loss of nutrient concentration
This can be a problem for other hydroponic techniques like the Nutrient Film Technique; the passing of water through the roots can get less fortified.
The fog will also reach all 100% of all roots – fully maximizing a healthy plant.
So… Why did you make the FogBox?
As part of the revolution, we are committed to providing the people with the technology of growing their own food and plants, without having to commit time and labor (as life can be in the fast lane for the majority of us).

WE’VE HIT OUR FIRST STRETCH GOAL! Thank you to everyone that helped share the campaign and believe in us so much to pre-order multiple units to help our factory get to large enough capacity to add the cool functions for everyone!!

This in-line controlled LED system will be automatically upgraded with everyone that has pledged for the FogBox with LED. If you just pledged for the base FogBox, it’s also not too late to change your pledge and receive the upgraded LED lighting!
BATMAN BLACK
As you may already know, the FogBox will now be in Batman Black! You can read more on why we decided to go with this design (spoiler alert: it’s for your future herb-growing convenience!) in this update.
We really appreciate all your feedback! Our manufacturers and our friends who have been doing aeroponics for years have strongly advised against allowing any light into the lower box because light limit root growth. Before making a final decision on spending more to alter the material to a customized sleek black color, we strongly considered using a light filtering material. The material will not be reliable with water on inside. And very unappealing with film on outside. The film will also allow other light to shine through. Which still causes algae and limits plant growth.
All the revisions we make to the product will only functionally make it better. We will not ship a product that does not perform long term. If the color change is a determining factor on whether the product fits in your home or office, we strongly advise you to decrease your pledge before the campaign ends. You can still support this incredible concept with just $1 =) We'll also make sure to keep you all updated as we seek a variety of materials.
Alternatively, you can also alter the color with paint or a film of your choice. At the moment, we're unable to source and test reliable and beautiful covers without pushing back delivery of the product significantly.
SHIPPING
As promised, we told you all we’d let you all know the final international shipping costs BEFORE the campaign ends. With much better understanding of initial order volume and specific # of packages going out to each intl country, we’ve been able to gather quotes from many fulfillment services that we will partner with to ship the FogBox. The package with the FogBox by itself is medium-sized and comes in around ~8 pounds. We’ve done our best to compare quotes from different fulfillment centers, and we went with the ones that could offer us the lowest shipping rates. In addition, we will be subsidizing some of the cost (broken down below):
DOMESTIC (US) will cost us $13 but you will be paying $10
EUROPE/ASIA will cost us $35 but you will be paying $29
AUS/NZ will cost us $50 but you will be paying $38
The $9 or $19 shipping charge (depending on if you were US or international) was a base shipping cost that we charged before we had exact prices of shipping costs. The $9/$19 you already paid will be deducted from the difference of the actual shipping cost - for example, if you’re located in the US and you’re charged $10 for shipping, you will be paying the difference of $10-9 = $1 when we send out Backerkit surveys.
