What Is Hydroponics?
over 5 years ago – Fri, Jul 12, 2019 at 03:03:00 AM

Growing food indoors can be tough.

There’s often not enough sunlight, and soil can be messy.

By utilizing a soil-less method of growing agriculture, hydroponics helps solve that problem, and takes it one step further.

You can grow plants not only soil-lessly, but can also save on space, water, and obtain a higher yield of crop.

You might ask, “just how can hydroponics achieve such amazing results”?

Well...

There are a quite a few different techniques that hydroponic growers utilize. But they all involve plants obtaining nutrients soil-lessly from a water-based solution.

Instead, plants are suspended in a medium such as clay pellets or water. Other variables such as light, oxygen, and nutrients are all carefully controlled to create an environment most optimal for each and every plant.

Each technique has its own strength, and there is no one right way to begin growing hydroponically. To help you gain a better understanding of what technique would be best for you, we’re covering six of the most common hydroponic growing techniques seen today.

The first hydroponic technique that we’ll be covering is known as an ebb and flow system (or flood and drain). As you may be able to guess from the name, this system utilizes a pump to fill a grow tray with a nutrient solution before draining back into a reservoir at a regular interval.

As the pump fills the grow tray with the nutrient solution, the plant’s roots receive an optimal amount of nutrients. When the water drains away, the roots receive huge amounts of oxygen keeping them healthy while simultaneously avoiding root rot. If there is a power outage, your plants will generally survive a couple days and you can water your plant manually

In terms of set-up, this system is generally one of the harder to start with because it requires more parts. Additionally, you’ll need to make sure that your grow tray does not under or overflow. However, it’s also easily one of the most effective and forgiving hydroponic systems that you can use if set-up correctly.

Nutrient Film Technique (NFT)

Another complex, yet effective hydroponic system utilizes the nutrient film technique (NFT). Similar to the ebb and flow method, a NFT system also uses a pump to force nutrient solution into a grow tray containing plant roots.

However, instead of the pump running in intervals allowing the grow tray to flood and then drain, the pump in a NFT system will run continuously pumping solution over the roots of the plant. The nutrient solution, or “film”, flows over the roots but doesn’t submerge them. The solution then drains back into the reservoir.

The planting tube is angled so that the solution will be pumped into the higher end, and drained out of the lower end after passing by the plant roots.

Similar to ebb and flow, NFT requires a lot of parts for set-up. Once set-up, it is very easy to maintain.

We would also recommend that you research what hydroponic system your plants prefer as some may prefer one technique over the other.

Aeroponics

Aeroponics is one of the most exciting types of hydroponic systems because unlike other hydroponic systems, aeroponics utilizes mist to deliver nutrients and water to the plants.

In such a system, misters pull nutrient solution from a water reservoir, and spray the solution onto the plant roots. Since plant roots are not submerged in solution, they are exposed to a lot of oxygen leading to healthy roots and plants.

One problem with an aeroponics system is that misters can be clogged relatively easily if not maintained, and roots will need to be misted frequently to avoid drying out.

However, if set-up correctly, an aeroponics system can be used very effectively to grow agriculture.

Deep Water Culture (DWC)

On the other end of the hydroponic systems spectrum exists deep water culture. Deep water culture, or DWC for short, is one of the most simple hydroponic systems to set-up.

It’s a fantastic system to start growing hydroponically with, is not too expensive, and is easy to maintain.

At the most basic level, a DWC system will involve the use of a grow tray suspended in water and an aerator to keep the water oxygenated. Nutrients can then be added to the water as needed.

Some downsides of DWC are that the roots are constantly submerged in water. This means that you have to be careful to monitor the temperature and pH of the water to avoid root rot. In addition, if the power goes out, your plants will drown in a few hours if you don’t have a back up.

If you’re just starting out with hydroponic growing, a DWC system would be great to try setting up because of its low cost and minimal parts.

Drip

For larger agricultural growers, a drip system is fantastic to allow for flexibility and customizability of multiple grow sites.

As the name implies, this system utilizes a dripper that is inserted into each plant medium allowing you to precisely provide every plant with the correct amount of nutrient solution. Any solution leftover is then recycled into the reservoir to be reused as needed.

Because the drippers allow for easy swapping between plants and have adjustable drip rates, this system makes it simple for growers to maintain control over their hydroponic system.

Wick

Similar to deep water culture systems, a wick hydroponic system is very simple and easy to set-up.

At its most basic, a wick system involves the use of a material such a rope to pull nutrient solution upwards before being absorbed by plants in the grow tray above.

If you’re just starting out with hydroponic growing systems, the wick system would be fantastic to use to learn since no electronics are needed making it easier to set-up and maintain.

To learn more about how a wick system works, check out this link on capillary action!

Conclusion

Growing food can come with many challenges.

You may have weather problems resulting in a lack of sunlight or water. Pests can completely decimate your crop. Or you may not have any outdoor space to use for a garden in the first place.

A hydroponic system can help take care of all of these problems as these systems are often enclosed, use their own light and nutrient solution source, and can be used almost in any location.

Just to recap, we’ve covered six of the most commonly used hydroponic systems, listed below:

  • Ebb And Flow
  • Nutrient Film Technique (NFT)
  • Aeroponics
  • Deep Water Culture (DWC)
  • Drip
  • Wick

Each of these systems have their own benefits and drawbacks, but we’ve covered the basics of to help give you a well-rounded overview of hydroponic systems.

Now…

We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Urban Farming in a Nutshell
over 5 years ago – Mon, Jun 03, 2019 at 11:23:41 PM

Urban farming also known as urban agriculture refers to producing food by growing them in the city. It is known to have its share of benefits some of which are easy and affordable access to organic produce all year round and the efficient use of limited space.

Most organic food is expensive making it difficult for a typical wage earner to afford. In conventional farming techniques, organic crops are harder to produce hence its costly price. The reason why most traditional farmers are forced to use chemical pesticides is to lessen the harmful factors present in the environment in accordance with different weather conditions. With urban farming, those factors are mitigated because it is done in a more controlled environment thus promoting a good yield of crops. Some urban farms are set up indoors, using water systems and artificial lighting techniques.

The beauty of urban farming is it makes efficient use of limited space or land since most farms are arranged vertically where plants are grown in shelves. It is surprising how much crops you can adequately produce with very minimal space. You can sustain your family with fresh and organic crops with just your rooftop as a farm.

With the help of technology urban farming is made relatively easy and popular because it does not require the farming skills necessary in traditional farming. Even those without a green thumb can easily grow and harvest food. Some urban farming systems are even controlled and maintained using apps to care for the plants.

Urban farmers use several techniques to grow crops, among the popular methods, are through soil, hydroponics, and aeroponics.

Healthy soil is fundamental in farms. Soil found in the city may be more polluted than in rural areas. Therefore there is sometimes a need to improve soil quality by adding compost to make it more nutrient dense to foster healthy produce.

To ensure that plants receive optimal levels of nutrients other urban farmers prefer to use hydroponics to grow their crops. In hydroponics, farmers do not use soil to grow plants but instead, the roots are exposed to continuous running water containing mineral and nutrient solutions. Since roots are not buried underground it is exposed to more air thus promoting easier absorption of oxygen. The earliest precursor to the practice of hydroponics dates back to 600 BCE as seen in the "hanging gardens" of Babylon.

(A growing trend in Vietnamese architecture can be found in the green fa̤ades and hanging gardens)
(A growing trend in Vietnamese architecture can be found in the green fa̤ades and hanging gardens)

Another commonly used technique in urban framing is the aeroponic system. It is done by spraying nutrient solutions to the roots of plants without the use of soil as a growing medium but instead, the roots are suspended in nutrient-dense mist. The aeroponic system claims to use less energy and water compared to conventional farming techniques. Since air is used as a growing medium for plants it is considerably easier to maintain. Plants also grow faster as compared to traditional farming methods.

Regardless of the method, you choose to set up and maintain your own urban garden it is best to remember that some areas depending on your locality, may have rules when it comes to urban agriculture. It is always best to check and research before investing your time and precious resources.

Restaurant that Prepares and Grows your Meal
over 5 years ago – Sat, May 04, 2019 at 01:15:39 AM

Aeroponics is fast becoming the most popular method of growing food. And by allowing people to grow healthier plants faster in less space and with less water, it's not hard to see why. We're already seeing the practice being adopted on the large scale with the Aerofarm supplying New York and New Jersey with fresh, nutritious and cheap vegetables, so it should come as no surprise that we are beginning to see the practice in our own neighborhoods, and maybe even in our favorite restaurants.

Tender Greens is a California restaurant chain that specializes in quick, healthy and sustainable food and their Hollywood location is taking that philosophy to the next level. Surrounding their outdoor dining patio is their very own aeroponic towers in which they grow and harvest a variety of herbs, vegetables, and fruits.

This makes Tender Greens, Hollywood one of the only places outside of a private farm where you can see your food be harvested, prepared, and served right in front of you. Aeroponic gardening means that the entire organic food is more nutritious and likely more flavorful than its factory-farmed counterpart.

In Tender Green's own blog post about the aeroponic garden, they stress that they were inspired to build it in response to California's ongoing drought. By growing their own food with 95% less water than in-soil farming, they become part of the solution to the water usage, rather part of the problem.

Of course, one garden won't be enough to fill California's water reserves, but hopefully, gardens like these can help to inspire others to do the same. And while one may not be much with enough restaurants aeroponically growing their own food, we really could make a difference and reduce the amount of resource we consume.

The Top 6 Reasons Why You Should Grow Hydroponically
over 5 years ago – Sat, Apr 20, 2019 at 09:11:50 AM

Do you want to grow higher quality plants faster, more sustainably, and save on space?

Well, you're in luck!

Hydroponics is a method of growing agriculture that helps you grow efficiently and sustainably.

This method of growing is especially ideal if you want to grow within a small space such as an apartment, or if you need to grow plants that require a specific type of climate.

How does it do this?

Hydroponics is the practice of growing plants in an inert soilless growing medium. Examples of such mediums can include rock wool, coconut fiber, or other similar options.

Similarly to soil, these plant mediums help provide support for the plants being grown. However, they don't provide any of the nutrition. Instead, all of the nutrition comes in the form of a nutrient solution which is often some sort of fertilizer mixed with water.

This solution is then filtered through the plant's roots, making it simple and easy for the plant. Furthermore, the entire hydroponic system is mostly automated. Timers allow you to control factors such as the lighting cycle, watering cycle, temperature, and humidity.

Since this whole process is controllable, it's easier to create the most optimal conditions for your plant's growth. This can lead to plants that are healthy and disease-free - without any of the mess!

Does that sound awesome? Well...it gets even better!

To get you even more excited, we've put together 6 of the top reasons why you should grow hydroponically below.

Reason 01: No Soil, No Mess

If you've ever grown using soil, you may understand how messy it can get. Soil can spill, there can be insects to deal with, and it can be hard to switch plants out after their roots have spread.

Hydroponics is a completely different story.

First, the environment is much more sterile. The main organic materials that you'll encounter will be the plants that you grow, the nutrient solution used, and potentially the plant medium in use. The rest of the system is often comprised of either plastic or metal, so there is less of a mess that you'll have to deal with.

Additionally, if you do live in a smaller space such as an apartment or want to grow indoors, then hydroponic growing can help keep your living areas cleaner with less effort.

Which brings us to our next point!

Reason 02: You Can Grow Anywhere

Hydroponic growing can be practiced almost anywhere! Have you ever wanted to grow a large tomato plant in your closet? Hydroponic growing makes that possible!

If you want to grow in your garage, living room, or your kitchen, hydroponics has you covered! Because you're using a system that can be set up in most places, you can control where you're growing and the amount of space that you want to use.

So hydroponics is clean, it can save space, and helps with...

Reason 03: Climate Control

Climate control can be a huge game changer for many home growers.

Different plants have different needs ranging from light through nutrition. For example, chilis tend to love having a lot of light since they're traditionally a tropical plant. For those of us further away from the equator, this can make growing chili a harder process.

Hydroponics can take care of this problem.

Since you're often in control of factors such as lighting, temperature, and humidity, it makes recreating the optimal environment for plants such as chili much easier. If your plant is getting too much light, you can simply reduce the amount of light it receives.

On the flip side, if you're growing outdoors in the soil, then optimization of climate is often out of your hands

Reason 04: You Conserve Water

Water is one of the world's most valuable resources, yet it has often been treated as though there is an endless supply.

Populations are on the rise, and with climate change occurring, many people are increasingly running out of fresh water. Already, more than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. Even within the United States, many areas are low on fresh water supply.

So how does hydroponics help solve this problem?

In California, it's estimated that 80% of water used by humans is used agriculturally. When growing using soil, water will often evaporate, or be lost within the ground.

On the other hand, since hydroponics is an enclosed system, any water not used by the plant will be recycled thus reducing water waste by up to 90%! Plants soak up the required nutrient solution, and anything leftover is recaptured to be recirculated.

With that in mind...not only will you help contribute to saving one of our most valuable resources, but you'll also be able to reduce your water bill by a large margin!

Reason 05: Your Plants Will Grow Faster

Remember how we mentioned that you have almost complete control of the growing environment?

Well, because of that control, you're able to optimize the environment to best suit the plant of your choice.

If your plant likes to grow in a tropical environment, such as the chili plant does, then you can recreate that environment using a hydroponics system.

If your plant requires a lot of water for optimal growth, simply create an environment in which your plant will have access to water more often.

Growing hydroponically can help you grow plants much faster resulting in more produce for your family's enjoyment.

Reason 06: Pest And Disease Free Environment

If you've ever grown plants outdoors or in a soil based environment, you'll understand how troublesome pests and disease can be for your plants.

Because of all of the interaction with the outside environment, it's hard to control what pests may go after your plants, or what diseases attack them. Although not completely pest and disease free, a controlled hydroponic environment puts the ball in your court.

Starting out, you should have a mostly sterile environment free of pests and disease. This is because your starting materials (pipes, pumps, fans, etc) are inorganic, and should be relatively clean.

Conclusion

Growing plants quickly, easily, and sustainably within a small space is now more possible than ever using an agricultural technique known as hydroponics.

Hydroponics involves the use of a plant medium in place of soil. Additionally, nutrients are mixed in with a reservoir of water, which can be fed to the plant's roots as needed through mechanisms such as a pump.

Many hydroponics systems also make use of lighting fixtures, fans, and other devices that can help control temperature, humidity, pH, and other factors that lead to healthier plants.

To reiterate, these are the top 6 reasons why you should grow hydroponically:

  • No soil, no mess
  • You can grow anywhere
  • Climate control
  • You conserve water
  • Your plants will grow faster
  • Pest and disease free environment

Hydroponics is an amazing solution to growing fresh produce sustainably in any location. And we've laid out some of the top reasons why you should be growing hydroponically.

If you've already tried growing hydroponically, what has your experience been like?

3 Ways You Can Grow Plants To Improve Your Wellbeing!
over 5 years ago – Thu, Mar 28, 2019 at 10:54:10 AM

Hey FogBox Backers,

With every second that passes by, the world is becoming more developed, and green spaces are quickly disappearing.

Why is this a problem?

According to multiple studies, green spaces appear to be essential to positive health and happiness. Many people are realizing the benefits of exercise, and a healthy diet. Similarly, having green in our lives appears to be of similar importance.

Unfortunately, it seems that green spaces may continue to disappear, but there is a solution...

Growing Green

How is growing green a solution?

As we lose access to public parks, reserves, and other parts of nature that were previously enjoyed by people, it’s important to find a replacement for the time being.

Individually, we have the power to improve our own well being and the well being of those in our local community by growing plants, vegetables, and other greenery ourselves.

If you’re wondering what the best ways of growing green are, have no worries! We’ve got you covered.

We’ve created a list of the top 3 ways that you can grow green in order to improve your health, happiness, and wellbeing:

  • Traditional grow
  • Hydroponic grow
  • Aeroponic grow

Traditional growing incorporates traditional methods of agricultural production, such as the use of soil, fertilizer, and reliance on a method of irrigation.

On the other hand, hydroponic and aeroponic methods of growing green haven’t been used as much traditionally, but are increasing in popularity.

Each method can result in beautiful plants, veggies, or other forms of agriculture and help increase your wellbeing substantially.

With that said...let’s get into the details of how to grow green!

Method 1: Traditional Grow

If you’re not afraid of getting a little dirty, then a traditional growing method may suit you!

This will most often involve the use of soil, a method of irrigation, sunlight, and possibly fertilizer.

Key Steps:

  • Decide what plant that will be grown
  • Research correct environmental conditions
  • Maintain correct environmental conditions

To begin growing green using traditional methods, you’ll first want to decide what plant you are growing.

Remember, some plants will grow better in certain conditions than others.

After you’ve decided on what you want to grow, it’s important to research what environmental conditions the plant will require.

Some important factors to consider:

  • Light requirements
  • Size of plant
  • Nutrition requirements
  • Water requirements

Generally, a quick Google search will produce the required information for you to use.

For example, if you’d like to grow tomatoes and searched, “How To Grow Tomatoes”, the first link that pops up (currently) is this guide by Bonnie Plants. This guide covers the correct ways to choose, plant, care, troubleshoot problems, and harvest tomatoes.

A popular method of growing a plant such as a tomato traditionally is through the use of a planter, such as the one seen here!

Planters are also a great way of growing other plants, but similarly to a garden, they do require the use of soil.

So if you’re looking for a method of growing green that’s a little cleaner...

Method 2: Hydroponic Grow

This method is a bit different from traditional growing practices, but you can still obtain the same great, beautiful results that’ll boost your happiness and wellbeing.

First...what is hydroponic growing?

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants and agriculture that is more efficient and less wasteful when compared to traditional agricultural methods.

Traditional methods require soil, sunlight, and rain. Hydroponics, on the other hand, does need any of the three listed traditional requirements.

Although plants grown hydroponically are grown in a different fashion, you’ll still end up with the same result of having beautiful greenery.

Awesome, right?

On to our next method!

Method 3: Aeroponic Grow

Did you know that it’s possible to grow plants using mist?

Similar to hydroponics, aeroponics is a method of growing plants that does not require the use of soil.

In this case, a liquid nutrient solution ‘bathes’ the plant roots when the solution is turned into mist.

If you can grow a plant hydroponically, then there is also a good chance that you’ll be able to grow it aeroponically as well.

In order to grow aeroponically, you will need to obtain the right tools such as a lighting system, fogging system, reservoir, and the correct nutrients. These can be found through your local gardening store or online.

To make life easier, we’ve also created the FogBox (pictured above) for home or office use to help you grow aeroponically.

Conclusion

As time has passed, nature has slowly begun to disappear, and in its place has come a concrete jungle.

Along the way, scientists have realized that with this disappearance has been a loss of wellbeing which green spaces and plants seem to help provide.

Listed below are three ways that you can grow green to improve the wellbeing of yourself and those in your community:

  • Traditional grow
  • Hydroponic grow
  • Aeroponic grow

Each of these growing styles have different strengths, and it’s up to you to pick which method you like the best. What's important to keep in mind is that using any of the three methods can ultimately lead to a boost in your happiness and wellbeing.
